The Dos And Don'ts For Taking Care Of Your Transmission

Posted on

A transmission is one of the most important parts of a vehicle. It is used to transfer the power from the car engine to the wheels, and without it, the car would not work. It is important to keep your transmission in the best possible shape so that you can keep your car running and prolong its life. There are certain things that you should do and other things that you should not do to keep the car's transmission running properly and smoothly.

1. Transmission Dos.

a. Do Check the Transmission Fluid. By checking the transmission fluid and ensuring that is properly filled, you will prolong the life of the transmission. Pull out the transmission dipstick, and put your finger into the transmission fluid. The fluid should be a clear with a pink tint. It should not have any debris in it. It should also not smell burnt, as this can indicate that it needs to be drained and refilled. You will also want to check the level to make sure there is enough transmission fluid.

b. Do Tune the Engine and Other Car Components. The Transmission is a major part of the vehicle. There are many other systems that feed into the transmission and can have a negative impact if they are not properly cared for. You will want to make sure the engine is tuned up so that it is running smoothly and not putting undue stress on the transmission. You can also ensure the wheels are balanced and working well.

2. Transmission Don'ts.

a. Don't Drag Race. Accelerating too quickly and running the RPMs too high will put undue stress on the transmission. Drag racing and other forms of high speed driving will cause the transmission to fail more quickly.

b. Don't Brake too Quickly. Just like accelerating too quickly can damage your transmission, stopping too quickly will damage the engine and transmission mounts. This can cause severe damage to the transmission.

c. Don't Tow with Drive Wheels on Ground. Your car should never be towed with the drive wheels on the ground. For example, if your car is rear wheel drive, the car should be towed with the front wheels on the ground. Towing your vehicle in the incorrect fashion will almost certainly cause serious transmission damage.

There are many more things that you should and should not do to keep your transmission healthy. These are some of the easiest ways that you can ensure that your transmission does not get unwarranted stress and become damaged.
