Transmission Mechanic, Unlimited: Myths About The Job Debunked

Posted on

A transmission mechanic often does a lot of work on transmissions, but that does not mean that is all he or she does. Because a transmission mechanic is fully trained to work in all areas of auto service, he or she is not limited to the title or the job responsibilities for which he or she is hired. Here are some more assumptions (or myths, if you will) about a transmission mechanic's job and the truth about what he or she does/can do.

Myth/Assumption #1: Transmission Mechanics Are Not Fully Educated

Just because a mechanic chooses to specialize in one part of the auto service industry does not mean he or she does not know how to fix the rest of your vehicle. It is the same thing as going to a specialist about some part of your body with the assumption that the specialist is not a full-fledged doctor because he or she only diagnoses and treats one area of the body. Both a medical specialist and an automotive specialist choose the specializations they do because they are really good at diagnosing and fixing problems with these specialties. Both are also fully trained professionals.

Myth/Assumption #2: A Transmission Mechanic Will Send You Elsewhere for Service Unrelated to Transmissions

In this case, some transmission mechanics might refer you to another mechanic, so this myth/assumption is partially true. This is either because he or she has a full workload on transmissions already and needs to focus on his/her work or because the transmission mechanic will only work on transmissions and that is the only service he/she provides. If this possibility is disconcerting to you, especially when you are not sure if your car's transmission has a problem, then find a transmission mechanic that is willing to do more than just transmissions and has plenty of time available right now to find and treat the problem with your car.

Myth/Assumption #3: A Transmission Mechanic Will Charge You a Lot of Money

Your transmission is a key part of your vehicle and how you are able to make the vehicle move the way you want it to. If something with your transmission goes bad, it will be expensive to fix no matter where you take it, so why not take it to a transmission specialist like those at Aamco Transmissions & Auto Repair? At least if you know you will be charged a lot of money to fix something as major as the transmission, you can justify utilizing the expert knowledge and skills of a transmission mechanic to get the job done correctly the first time.
