Things To Consider When Looking For Enclosed Trailers To Move Vehicles And Other Cargo

Posted on

Enclosed trailers are an excellent way to move cargo or complete vehicles and keep them secure, out of the weather, and out of sight. When you start looking at enclosed trailers for sale, you will find many sizes and styles to choose from, so finding the one that works best for you is essential.

Determining Your Needs

Considering the best trailer for your situation often means determining what you are going to haul with it. If you plan to move a car, enclosed trailers that are wide and have the wheel well outside the box are a good option. Choosing a floor made from the same steel or aluminum as the trailer will make it easier to keep clean if the car you are moving leaks oil or other fluids.

The rear door is also critical, and if you choose a trailer with a door that folds to make a ramp, check with the manufacturer to ensure the ramp is strong enough to support the weight of a car or light truck. The fold-down doors on enclosed trailers are often built to withstand the abuse, and an integrated ramp on the trailer makes loading much more manageable.

A side access door is another feature available on most enclosed trailers and allows access to the front of the trailer even after a car or other cargo has been loaded. If you need to haul some small items with the vehicle, securing the vehicle and then loading the remaining items in from it can often be the simplest way to ensure everything fits in the trailer.

Hitches And Towing

Enclosed trailers are available in several hitch styles to make towing the trailer easier with your existing truck or tow vehicle. Longer trailers often require more substantial hitch systems and using gooseneck or fifth-wheel hitches offers higher load ratings and is often more stable than a standard hitch.

Smaller enclosed trailers do not need a hitch that substantial, so a standard receiver hitch with a Class IV rating is enough even when towing a vehicle inside. The trailer dealer can help you if you are unsure which hitch system is best, and most will install a tow hitch on your truck or car for you if you need it.

The best trailer hitch system on the market will not work if your tow vehicle is too small or underpowered, and the trailer dealer may suggest a trailer based on the vehicle you are planning to use. If you are towing with a van or truck with lighter suspension, adding some airbags to the rear to help support the trailer weight and improve handling can be a great option to enhance the towing experience.
